Stillman College, initially named Tuscaloosa Institute, became known as Stillman College in 1948. Between 1967 - 1980, during Dr. Harold N. Stinson's presidency, Stillman College developed quite much, new programs being added to the students' curricula, additional buildings were constructed for the students and some other were renovated. But it was not until the presidency of Dr. Cordell Wynn, between 1982-1997 that the Stillman campus developed into the great place that is today.
There were two new centers built, the Marie Lundy Wynn Hall and Johnson/Robinson Student Health Center and other two buildings renovated, the Winsborough and John Knox Halls. That was also the period when the students' enrollment grew really fast and new programs were added, such as a community-service component and the Stillman Management Institute.
Stillman College is also famous for the areas of technology, athletics and scholarly pursuits, especially under the fifth president who managed to draw attention on the college and the school became a leader in wireless computing, being awarded with the ational Innovation in Technology Award by Apple Computers. Stillman College received in 2004 and still keeps the rank of being one of the top tier schools in U.S. News and World Report.
Stillman College Athletics are called the Tigers and they compete at the Division II of NCAA and also in the SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).
